Joyce McCarl Nielsen became a full-time artist after a career in academia. Her work reflects two contrasting styles, one that is linear and graphic, the other more organic, expressive, and slightly discordant. Though always abstract, it is often layered, textured, and multi-colored, and hints at fun, and lightheartedness. The subject matter of her paintings ranges from pots and pans to old-fashioned trains to the letter-number combinations of the chemical elements to whimsical abstractions. She uses many mediums--acrylic, oil, pastel, charcoal, graphite, collage, pen and ink, crayon and colored pencils-- in various combinations and sometimes all in one painting.
