Inkberry Books: December 13th at 7:00 PM

Author Ellen Wilkin and Illustrator Lisa Larsen

Snow Signals

The poems in this book are about winter, both external and internal. The poet begins by relating to the interior space inside her own room, then moves on to seek a deeper connection with nature. She observes then responds to pre-dawn skies, ice, snow, and glittering sunrises. She

expresses her curiosity about birds -- especially owls -- and their ability to fit into the natural world better than she does. The poet then focuses on the planets and the stars in the moments between night and day. She sees in the relationship between Earth and its moon, and among other planets and moons, the human qualities of patience, love, and sacrifice, but also the ability to give and take. Finally, the astronomical and earth-bound elements combine to give her sudden insights, some simple and some complex, that she is compelled to share with others.
